Announcements for CIS 211

(May 31, 2000) I put the JVM on the web under the "code" link.
(26 May 2000) Joshua Madden's labs, normally scheduled for Monday, have been cancelled for Dead Week (the week of Monday 29 May), since Monday has itself been cancelled due to lack of interest. :) Anyone that has questions about Lab 9 should either email him or attend his office hour on Tuesday.
(22 May 2000) Clarification for lab 8: if you are doing the n-queens problem, you need to generate all solutions, not just one.
(22 May 2000) Regarding Lab 8 (the one due this Wednesday, 24 May): you need to hand in four things, as follows:
- An electronic copy of the source code that you wrote, for each problem. This should be on your web page.
- An electronic copy of the applets or executable code that are built from your source code. You need to make sure that you give me enough information so that I can run your program and make sense of the results.
- The source code should come with instructions for how to compile it into an executable format. If your source code is known not to work, tell us so that we don't waste our time trying to build and run it.
- As usual, a paper copy of the code that you wrote. This should include the URL for the electronic copy of the source code and the executable, and the instructions for how to compile the source code.
NOTE: If you are solving the n-queens problem, DO NOT turn in printouts of all of the possible solutions that you generate. Put the solutions on a single separate web page.
(May 17, 2000) Your colleague Bryan Kolaczkowski wrote an applet that illustrates the binary tree traversal using a stack.
(16 May 2000) Joshua Madden's comments on Labs 4 and 5 are now available. Please read them carefully and follow the suggestions. Doing so will probably improve both your grades and his sanity. :)
(16 May 2000) Joshua Madden has finished grading his students' copies of Lab 5. They may be picked up in class tomorrow or during his office hours.
(May 16, 2000) Several people asked about "extra credit". There will be two chances for you to earn some extra points:
- I will drop the lowest grade in the labs.
- Choose any programming project of your choice in the book, send me email to make sure it is an appropriate one, and then solve the problem. A problem that would get the maximum of 5% extra credit is something AT LEAST of the size and complexity of Problem 11.9 (p.496). Please make sure you send me email at sabry@cs.uoregon.edu FIRST.
(10 May 2000) Joshua Madden has finished grading his students' copies of Lab 4. You can pick them up during his office hours on Wednesday or Thursday; if you can't make either of those times, email him at jmadden@cs.uoregon.edu and another time can be arranged.
(May 10, 2000) I've made my entire implementation of the hardware machine available from the main page for CIS 211. It is a "jar" file that includes all the source code, class files, and documentation. Enjoy.
(5 May 2000) Additional guidelines for submission for Lab 6: it should be in the following format:
1. Problem (what issue are you addressing?)
2. Solution (what is your solution--generally speaking)
3. Advantages (what are the advantages of this approach in general?)
4. Disadvantages (...disadvantages...?)
5. Citation (where did you get this approach from? Name, organization if possible, name of paper or book, URL if relevant; give us enough information that we can easily track down your source.)
6. Solution (your implementation of the chosen solution on some relevant portion of the Duck Machine)
7. Advantages (what are the advantages of this solution for this part of the Duck Machine?)
...and anything else that you may choose to add.
The handout given in class, as well as the link below, should give you enough references to design patterns that you can find an appropriate one for the assignment.
(May 4, 2000) One of your colleagues found this site about design patterns to be very helpful. I agree. Please check it out.
(May 2, 2000) I believe I made a mistake when talking about a "private" constructor for the Instruction class. The constructor should be "protected" so that the subclasses can refer to it.
(May 1, 2000) Amr will not be able to hold office hours tomorrow at 1:30.
(April 22, 2000) Joshua Madden will be out of town from Tuesday night through Sunday night, and will not be able to attend his office hours or answer email during this time. Please direct questions to Professor Sabry or Laxman Pulumati during this time. Thanks.
(April 21, 2000) Homework 4 deadline has been extended until WEDNESDAY. Basically I didn't like the way the lecture went today; I'll try again Monday.
(20 April 2000) Joshua Madden's comments on labs 2 and 3 are now available.
(20 April 2000) The solution to the midterm is available.
(14 April 2000) A brief addition to Joshua's list of suggestions and comments has been made, on the subjects of
- input handling in general and integers in particular
- test drivers
Please take a look; they are at the bottom of the section entitled "Coding Conventions, Styles, and Software Engineering Tips". I have also added a link to a more extensive style guide.
(10 April 2000) Office hour re-revision: Joshua Madden's Thursday office hour, which had been moved to Friday 3-4 PM, has now been moved again to 2-3 PM Friday. (This is in light of the fact that (a) we don't have class Friday, so the time is available and (b) I had to make a doctor's appointment for 3:15 PM.) "We apologize for the inconvenience." :)
(9 April 2000) Joshua Madden has posted some suggestions for the programming of future labs, based on his grading of lab 1, here. Many of these comments are not specific to lab 1, so students are advised to keep them in mind.
(8 April 2000) Joshua Madden will be out of town all day Thursday. His Thursday 2-3 office hour will be moved to Friday, 3-4 (after class).
(5 April 2000) RESCHEDULING:
- Joshua Madden's Thursday office hour for tomorrow (6 April, Thursday) only will be moved one hour later, to be from 3-4 PM (to accommodate his dental appointment). After this the office hour will be from 2-3 PM as the schedule indicates.
- Joshua Madden's Monday 12:00 lab has been rescheduled for this Friday at 3:00. The students in this lab are not required to attend this makeup session, but any students having questions about Lab 2 (due Monday, 10 April) are advised to attend.
(April 3, 2000) Joshua Madden and Pulumati Laxman have given their office hours. They are listed on the main course web page (Joshua's are also on his website.)
(April 3, 2000) We have reserved one of the boxes in the CIS main office. For your (and our) convenience, please drop the homeworks in the box before 5 PM on the due date. Thanks.
(March 30, 2000) Additional instructions for Lab 1:
- You should submit stapled or paperclipped copies of all code that they have written for this assignment, including drivers, and also printouts of the outputs from your test drivers. Please make sure that you put the following information on your submissions:
  - name
  - class name (CIS 211)
  - lab period (e.g., Monday 13:00)
  - lab number (Lab 1)
  - Social Security Number
- You are reminded that the labs are due at the beginning of class on Monday. Information is often introduced in the lectures which is not readily available elsewhere, so skipping class to get the lab done is not a good idea.
- For Part II: some students have asked how they are expected to read in the numbers (to be converted to binary and compared). You have two options: either read them in from the command line, or prompt the user to enter them interactively. NOTE: don't try to use the Keyboard class described in Lewis and Loftus, as it is not part of the Java API.
(March 28, 2000) Due to scheduling conflicts, the department had to shuffle some of the GTFs around. We apologize for the confusion. Instead of Marilyn Rice, we now have Pulumati Laxman Rao V. as a second GTF.
