Subject: A348/A548 in high gear!
Dear A348 and A548 Friends,
I have just posted the first round of grades for A348 and
A548 under section 1273. Please check them and let me know
if you have any questions, or if I can be of any help.
From here on we will proceed as follows:
- The class becomes OPEN SOURCE. That means anybody can
share any or all code with anybody. Feel free to post on
your sites anything that could be of use to others, that
you may be proud of. Programming is a lot like cooking -
and few chefs start from no recipes, reinventing it all.
Share your recipes with others, and explain them to all.
- I will provide all feedback. Grades will be posted on
the web, in Postem, promptly, and are my responsibility.
Labs will be coordinated, as they currently are, by Andrey,
Bob, Sangwook, Francisco, Michael, Ying and Steve, as posted.
- There are no deadlines, only suggested timelines. But
please be careful: late and very late assignments may be
left ungraded for lack of time. Please keep up - as much
as you can, with our schedule.
- Exams are closed-book. You will be expected to answer
questions about your assignments. As the assignments are
open source, you should have no problem turning them in,
just the responsibility of understanding them well. Each
of the two written exams will draw questions (only) from
the 6-7 homework assignments. So understanding them well
will highly pay off! (But exams are not open source).
- From here on we will be limited only by our fears, or
only by our imagination. Check that you're in control of
the material presented in class by explaining it to your
classmates. Brag about your understanding of it and show
off by helping out when needed, and even when not!
- I have posted a list of office hours. AIs will assist
with your labs, and keep office hours. There may also be
(sometimes) pop quizzes in the lab, so keep your servers
always in a good state of functioning.
In the forthcoming weeks and months a lot of useful info
will be coming your way please let us know when you need
help to better control it, and we'll be glad to help.
All of us will monitor the newsgroup (ac.csci.a348
).
To summarize, the main point is that there's no limit as
to what extent you can share code and knowledge to better
prepare for exams. I am firmly convinced that this way we
can cover the material better, and you can end up with a
complete, and useful, overview of all of programming, as
can be done on the web today.
... Adrian
P.S. This message sent to the new distribution list. If
you have dropped the course or want to be taken off this
list please let me know and I'll take your username off
the list. If you need anything, please let me know. This
A348 (of Spring 2001) will be the best, most informative
and most efficient class ever! Let us know when you need
our help.
